Trash Bag Thickness: What the Numbers Actually Mean

Every trash bag has a thickness rating, and almost nobody knows what it means. The packaging says "0.9 mil" or "strong" or "ultra strong" and you're supposed to just trust that, apparently. Let's actually break this down.

Trash bag thickness is measured in mils. One mil equals one thousandth of an inch (0.001 inches). That's not a millimeter – it's an American unit that exists primarily in the plastics and packaging industry. A standard trash bag ranges from about 0.5 mil to 1.5 mil. That might not sound like a big range, but the difference between 0.5 and 1.0 mil is roughly the difference between a bag that tears when you look at it and one that can handle a Thanksgiving dinner's worth of food scraps.

Here's a rough guide to what different thicknesses actually mean in practice:

0.5 mil and below: These are economy bags. Fine for dry, light waste – think paper towels, tissues, junk mail, empty packaging. If everything going in the bag is dry, they'll hold up. The moment you add moisture or anything with an edge (a tin can lid, a chicken bone, a broken piece of anything), these bags become unreliable. They're the ones that tear when you pull the drawstring or split open when you pick them up.

0.7 mil: The mid-range. This is where most name-brand kitchen bags sit. They handle normal household waste reasonably well, but they're still vulnerable to punctures from sharp objects and they struggle with heavy loads. If your trash is mostly food scraps and packaging, 0.7 mil works. If you're regularly throwing away anything heavy or sharp, you'll double-bag – which defeats the purpose of saving money on thinner bags.

0.9 mil: This is the sweet spot for kitchen use. At 0.9 mil, the bag has enough structural integrity to handle wet food waste, moderate weight, and incidental sharp objects without tearing. This is the minimum thickness we use at LAST BAG for all our sizes, and it's not because we love spending more on materials – it's because this is the point where the failure rate drops to near zero.

1.0-1.2 mil: Heavy duty territory. These bags are what you want for outdoor cans, construction debris, yard waste, or any situation where the bag will be sitting for a while, exposed to temperature changes, or carrying genuinely heavy loads. They cost more per bag but the peace of mind is worth it if you've ever had a 30-gallon bag split open on your driveway.

1.5 mil and above: Contractor grade. These are for construction sites, renovation cleanouts, and industrial use. They'll hold broken drywall, sharp metal, and heavy rubble. You don't need these for household use, but if you're remodeling your bathroom, buy a box.

Now, here's something the industry doesn't talk about much: thickness alone doesn't tell the whole story. Two bags can both be 0.9 mil and perform very differently, because the type of plastic matters just as much as the amount.

Most trash bags are made from polyethylene, but there are different types. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is stretchy and flexible – it's what gives bags that elastic quality where they stretch before they tear. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is stiffer and more crinkly – those thin grocery-style bags are HDPE. Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is the hybrid that most premium trash bags use because it combines flexibility with puncture resistance.

The best bags use an LLDPE blend that's been optimized for tear resistance and tensile strength. That means the bag stretches under load instead of immediately splitting, and it resists puncture from bones, cans, and other sharp kitchen waste. Two bags of identical thickness can have very different real-world performance depending on the resin blend.

One more thing worth mentioning: the drawstring matters more than people realize. A thick bag with a cheap drawstring is like a safe with a weak lock. The drawstring is the failure point in most bag designs – it's where the weight concentrates when you lift the bag. A woven, reinforced drawstring distributes the load across a wider area and resists the cutting action that a thin string creates against the plastic. It's a small detail that makes a big difference when you're carrying a full kitchen bag to the curb.

The practical takeaway: don't buy bags under 0.7 mil for kitchen use. Aim for 0.9 mil as your baseline. Go thicker for outdoor and heavy-duty use. And pay attention to the drawstring – it's the part most likely to fail.
